Create a Contrast List Many people have trouble identifying what they want in a job or a career, but they certainly can identify what they dont want. In fact, my clients usually have a laundry list of complaints based on previous experiences. You might think it isnât worthwhile to focus on this, but knowing what you donât want is actually a great place to start developing what I call a Career Contrast List. Hereâs how it works: First, ask yourself: What isnt working at your current job and any previous jobs youâve had? If youâre a recent grad with minimal work experience, thatâs okay. Include any volunteer work youâve done, leadership positions youâve held, projects youâve worked on in school. Think about the people, the work environment, and the job responsibilities or tasks you performed. Consider everything. Do a brain dump and write down whatever comes to mind on the left side of a piece of paper. Then, once youve identified what you dont like, start a contrast list to the right of this list. Jot down the opposite of each item you dont like. This begins to define what you DO want in a job. So the list on the right side is your list of WANTS. For example, if you dont like working on the same project on a regular basis, what would you rather have? Identify what you DO want with a statement like this: âresponsibility for a variety of projects at the same time.â Or, âworking with short-term projects that only last two to three months.â Next, think about anything you do like about your current job, and note those on your want list as well. The notes can be about people: your boss, colleagues, or clients. It can be about the work environment: the physical space or the culture at your organization. Or maybe the tasks you perform: your daily schedule, how often you are inside or outside your office. Anything goes and the more you write, the more clarity you will have about what you really want. There are two critical things to note about this process. First, when youâre creating your list be as specific as possible about the things you do and donât want. Second, be careful that you donât become lazy when youâre writing your list of wants. Donât just take the opposite of the things you donât want. Instead, think about what you want and be clear about it. For example, if you didnât like your boss at a previous position explain why. Donât just write down âbad boss.â Was he not a good mentor, did she not prioritize well or communicate effectively? Explain why, and do the same when you define what you want instead. Perhaps youâd like someone who is a good mentor and is interested in your career development. Maybe you want someone who meets with you once a week to help define your priorities. Second, whatever it is you want, write it down. Clients often tell me they think what theyâre writing is unrealistic. Theyâre tempted to start adjusting their list early in the process. I tell them not to. Weâre going for the ideal here. Weâre shooting for the moon. This list is the litmus test for your dream job. Thereâs plenty of time to compromise later; but if you start playing small now, youâll get even smaller in the end. In a nutshell: Knowing what you donât want in an ideal job, and identifying the opposite of that to determine what you do want, is a solid first step in defining your ideal career path. 12 Women Who Say Sexual Harassment Cost Them Their Careers The list of powerful men accused of wielding their influence to abuse, harass, and rape women keeps growing. After the dust settles, many of the alleged abusers, like comedian Louis C.K. and Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein, will face irreparable professional damages. But their careers wonât be the first theyâve derailed. Many of the women who have come forward over the last several months say theyâve suffered devastating repercussions as a direct result of the abuse. Some have lost jobs and promotions; others have changed their entire career trajectory in an attempt to mitigate the possibility of another assault. Their stories point to a troubling pattern for survivors who speak out of against workplace mistreatment â" according to one study, 75% face some form of retaliation. Hereâs how some high-profile sexual assault cases have shaped the careers of the women thrust into them. Goodman and Wolov, a Chicago-based comedy duo, told the New York Times that an unwanted sexual encounter with the comedian, and their decision to speak about it openly, sullied their professional reputation. âGuys were backing away from us,â Wolov told the Times. A day after the incident, âWe could already feel the backlash.â In a statement, C.K. confirmed the allegations. âI have been remorseful of my actions. And Iâve tried to learn from them. And run from them. Now Iâm aware of the extent of the impact of my actions,â he wrote. In the Times story, Goodman and Wolov also allege that Dave Becky, C.K.âs manager, urged their management team to keep the encounter under wraps. As a result, the duo have worried Becky (who manages superstar comedians like Aziz Ansari and Amy Poehler) has knowingly blocked them from projects. For many of Weinsteinâs victims, speaking out against the executive, or rebuffing his advances, has caused significant career damage. In an interview with Variety, actress Tara Subkoff â" who made her film debut in the 1994 thriller When the Bough Breaks â" says her professional life never fully recovered after she turned down a sexual advance from Weinstein at a premiere party around the same time. âMy reputation was ruined by false gossip, and I was called âtoo difficult to work with,ââ she says. âIt became impossible for me to get work as an actress after this.â Actress Mira Sorvino told the New Yorker that an encounter with Weinstein may have blacklisted her from job opportunities. âI definitely felt iced out and that my rejection of Harvey had something to do with it,â she says. Rosanna Arquette, another actress who spoke to the New Yorker about alleged harassment from Weinstein, says the producer told her she was making a mistake by rejecting him. âHe made things very difficult for me for years,â she says. When she refused, OâReilly âbegan to retaliate against her both on and off air,â her lawyers write in a letter to Fox News. Hereâs an excerpt: Mr. OâReilly ânitpicked her workâ and would âberate Ms. Huddy for minor mistakes,â according to the letter. Mr. OâReilly stopped preparing her for segments and would surprise her with story angles that they had not discussed. In 2013, Ms. Huddy was replaced on one segment of his show. Another segment that she was featured in, called âMad as Hell,â was canceled. She did not complain, fearing retaliation, she told current and former Fox News employees at the time. In October, Huddy appeared on an NBC News segment hosted by Megyn Kelly, her former Fox News colleague, to talk about the challenges harassment victims face when going against powerful companies like Fox News. âYou know that youâre just this one person thatâs about to go up against literally a machine,â she said. In April, OâReilly was forced out of his anchor position at Fox News. Last month, the Times reported that OâReilly paid $32 million to settle new sexual harassment claims at the beginning of the year. OâReilly has continuously denied all allegations against him â" in a radio interview with Glenn Beck a few days after the news broke, OâReilly called the Times reporting âa malicious smear,â and has also said he was âmad at Godâ for his current situation. In the weeks following, more than 20 other women came forward with allegations against Ailes, leading to his eventual resignation. Kellie Boyle, a former political communications consultant who says she was harassed by Ailes in 1989, says the incident âsouredâ her dream of working in politics. Today, she runs a marketing firm with her husband. âI was really lost for a few years,â Boyle tells Fortune. âI had my career taken away from me.â Ailes denied all of the allegations against him before his death in May 2017. Andrea Constand, former director of operations of the womenâs basketball team at Temple University, switched to massage therapy after Cosby assaulted her in 2004, according to reports. So did Helen Gumpel, a former model and actress who says Cosby made sexual advances towards her during an audition for The Cosby Show in 1988. âI never thought of myself as a victim because I refused his advances,â Gumpel said in a 2015 press conference. âBut my career was a victim.â In a 2014 column for the Washington Post, Barbara Bowman says Cosby drugged and rape her in 1985, when she was an aspiring actress. She told her agent, and a friendâs lawyer, but neither offered to make her story public. Today, she works as an artist in Phoenix. âI was a teenager from Denver acting in McDonaldâs commercials,â Bowman writes. âHe was Bill Cosby: consummate American dad Cliff Huxtable and the Jell-O spokesman. Eventually, I had to move on with my life and my career.â Cosby denies the allegations, and has sued some of his accusers for defamation. Conservative pundits, for their part, famously deemed her âa little bit nutty and a little bit slutty.â Thomas denies the allegations. In 2010, his wife left a voicemail on Hillâs answering machine asking her to recant her decades-old accusation, according to the New York Times. In the years since the scandal broke, Hillâs had no trouble finding work as a professor, speaker, and author. But after the Weinstein news broke, she spoke candidly about the professional challenges sexual harassment victims face to Variety. âYou donât want to have this become you or your brand,â she says. âIn some ways, the higher the profile of the person youâre accusing is, the more likely that is to happen.â

Sexism At The Olympics And Why It Matters While Americans are living in a time characterized by immense progress toward gender equality, the coverage of the Olympic games in rio de janeiro has shown just how far we have yet to come. When journalists credit the man behind the female athlete, or first reference herbei status as a wife or mother before highlighting her athletic achievements (if at all), they reinforce the quaint idea that a woman is successful because of the men in her life and remove the respect she deserves by reassigning the ownership of that success. When Corey Cogdell wins her second Olympic medal in trap shooting, the Chicago Tribunes tweet fails to even name her or her sport and instead announces Wife of Bears lineman wins a bronze medal and later elaborates on her achievement in an article where she is referred to most prominently as wife when Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszshatters a world record and wins gold and the camera immediately pans to her husband/coac h with NBCs Dan Hicks commenting Theres the guy responsible... when the reflex to acknowledge the athletic feats of women like swimmer Katie Ledecky or gymnast Simone Biles is to call them the female versions of Michael Phelps or LeBron James when we dont explain the technicalities of a sport or what makes it difficult because we assume that the female audience wants only the soap operawe notlage only do a tremendous disservice to the athletes, but they also stall our progress toward greater equality in society as whole.Some of the commentary may seem innocuous, but when put into the context of NBC Olympics greater content strategy, a mora troubling picture emerges.NBC Olympics CMO John Miller explains that the Olympic viewing audience is mostly female and, theyre less interested in the result and more interested in the journey. Its sort of like the ultimate reality show and mini-series wrapped into one.The commentary that flows from those assumptions and that vast generalization of women, which does not reflect the women I know, reveals deep-seated stereotypes that pervade our culture.So, while the Olympic Games coincide with an unprecedented presidential campaign where for the first time in our 240-year history, a major US party has nominated a woman for the position of commander in chief, we find ourselves in Rio with an onslaught of coverage and commentary that not only attributes the tremendous success and physical prowess of female athletes to men, but fails to highlight first and foremost, the reasons they are on the world stage in the first place. Importantly, we would never talk about our male athletes in the same way, though the absurdity is easily seen when we reverse the story.What we say matters. Prejudices and stereotypes persist precisely because they so easily roll off the tongue, so while it might not feel natural, it is incumbent upon us all to consider the implications of what we are saying if we want to truly embody the notion of gender equ ality. These stereotypes undermine the progress we have made as a country and limit us from performing at our peak.
